I type, “Cliff Sandings.”

Well. How interesting. Apparently, he is the head of security for the British royal family. The NEW head, that is. After the shootings, another outfit is in place. I conjure up what I know of the family. For one thing, the crown princess, Katharine, will enroll in a Maine college next month. Could that be what Cliff is calling me about?

I find out forty-five minutes later after we connect. He’s white-haired, distinguished, blue tie, everything I imagined he would be. As for me, I scrambled at the last minute to brush my rumpled hair and to change my shirt.

“It’s my pleasure to meet you, Veronica,” Cliff says warmly. “I have friends who know your father. He’s a hard man, tight with his praise. When it comes to you, though…”

“I love the guy.”

“Before we proceed, I must ask that everything we discuss remains confidential,” he cautions.

“Certainly.”

“I’m calling about Her Royal Highness Princess Katharine,” Cliff explains. “The queen wants an undercover guard on the Purcell College campus. Someone who masquerades as a student and whose true identity is unknown to her daughter.”

I give him credit for trusting me to understand what is going on with the princess. No tedious background. “Oh. Interesting.”

“I’d like you to be the guard.”

I blink. “Whoa. Me undercover? I’m a PI.”

“Exactly. We need someone who’s a combination of investigator, lone ranger and MacGyver. And we need someone who can start next month.”

“I have a business here. I really—”

“It can’t be cheap to run a solo-woman venture in L.A. I’m assuming you don’t bring in more than $40,000 a year after expenses. How would you like to make $200,000 a year for the next four years and have summers off?”

“Well, when you put it like that…”
